Image courtesy of Brookhaven National Laboratory Brookhaven National Laboratory—in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Bioenergy Technologies Office, the Alliance for Green Heat, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory—is hosting the Fifth Wood Heater Design Challenge to accelerate the design and deployment of clean and efficient wood and pellet heaters in the United States. The Design Challenge will consist of a “Technology Slam” in fall of 2022 where participants present their intended design, followed by the Stove Competition in winter of 2023. With an estimated 12.5 million homes in the United States using wood or pellets for space heating, this challenge stands to develop the most innovative wood heaters that are cleaner and more efficient to create a significant impact on the environmental footprint of domestic heating.
